(LOS ANGELES) What should you wear to ProScout? It’s up to you – but here are tips that can make YOU look like a star (on a budget).  Let’s use our friendly teenage Nickelodeon stars;  singer-actress Selena Gomez and past ProScouter Carlos Knight.  How they looked for Nickelodeon’s 25th Kids’ Choice Awards held at Galen Center on March 31, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. The Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards brought out the channel’s hottest young stars to the bright orange carpet at the USC Galen Center last weekend. The show was notably more casual than, say, the Oscars or Golden Globes — knowing there is a distinct possibility you may get “slimed” may be a contributing factor — but the attendees managed to look appropriate and stylish without the floor-length gowns or tuxedos.

Actress-singer (and Justin Bieber’s girlfriend) Selena Gomez and actor Carlos Knight stood out in the crowd of mini-dresses and slacks in looks that were fresh and playful. Gomez, who took home the award that night for favorite television actress, stars on the Nickelodeon channel’s “The Wizards of Waverly Place,” while Knight plays Owen Reynolds in the Nickelodeon show “Supah Ninjas.”

Gomez chose a cropped bustier and skirt, both from the Dolce & Gabbana spring 2012 ready-to-wear collection; orange and pink studded stilettos by Cesare Paciotti; and jeweled hoop earrings by Ippolita jewels. Gomez’s bustier could easily transition from awards show attire to appropriate wear for next weekend’s Coachella music festival, with cut-off jeans and maybe a flower in her hair. Is acting in your DNA? Need to channel your inner supermodel? Here are “get discovered tips from stars who’ve done it. Hilary Rhoda, a native of Chevy Chase, Maryland, has had quite the rise in the world of modeling. Discovered at a ProScout open call event in Washington, DC in 2004, she has appeared in everything from Vogue to Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, in advertisements for Balenciaga and Gucci, has a contract with cosmetic giant Estée Lauder and is one of the top-earning supermodels in the world.

How'd he do it? Garrett Hedlund, from actor newbie to Hollywood heartthrob.

Garrett Hedlund, a former resident of Arizona has also become a seriously recognizable star among Hollywood’s power players. Discovered at a ProScout open call event  in Phoenix a few years back, he just went for it without blinking. The event paid off for him;    he recently starred in Disney’s “Tron: Legacy”, co-starred opposite Gyneth Paltrow in “Country Strong”, and his next film, “On the Road”, pairs him with Twilight star Kristen Stewart. Oh, did we mention Garrett was named one one of Hollywood’s new Elite by Vanity Fair magazine last year? Yep, he was.

The science of getting discovered.

Do stars align differently for a few lucky people, or is there a success formula that can work for others?  If you believed everything you read on the internet these days, you might think all you had to do is post your pictures on some models website, or walk into a major talent agency and be signed.   Is it really that easy?  I recently spoke with several of our major agency friends who work inside the big name firms (Heather at Paradigm, Scott at Osbrink, Blake at Ford, Greg at Wilhelmina, Pedro at CESD, Phira at Photogenics, David from Generation) and asked them to comment on one question: Question: “Do you think the internet makes it easier to get discovered, get signed, become a actor, talent, or model?” Their answers, summed up were pretty much the same thing:   Answer: Truth be told, for a few people who submit the right thing at the right time, the answer is, occasionally, yes.  For almost all other people – including most all aspiring models, youth talent, actors, commercial – type up-and-comers who don’t understand the complicated business of modeling and acting – the answer is, pretty much, no. They collectively agreed that, for the most part, the internet is a tremendously useful tool – but if you don’t know who to impress in the industry, or how to impress them – you’ll probably still end up where you you started – baffled.

The business side of “being discovered”  (or) How do I get from where I am to where I want to be?

There is a business side to modeling and acting that newcomers are unaware of.  (Just because you LOOK like a model , or can ACT like an actor, doesn’t mean you’re in the game just yet) Summed up, a talent needs to somehow be seen, recruited, and signed by a solid, legit, industry-relevant talent agency.  Preferably, a major name agency that clearly works with deep pocketed and highly visible advertisers  and entertainment companies.  Ask any model, actor, or agent who is not delusional, and you’ll be told the same – your perceived value as a talent is often judged by the perceived level of your agency representation.  Although the agents technically work for you in the end (you the “talent”, them “your agent”), you wont be able to get anywhere in the industry until you get a  top agency believing in you.

Step 1:  Get a great agency loving you. If you can get a top agency believing in you, you’ll have an expert on your side.  Top-tier agencies can mentor you, guide you, get your name and face out there among people and clients that matter.  How you go after meeting the top-tier agencies is where things get tricky.  First, most major agencies are highly exclusive, and getting an appointment is either very difficult or in many cases, completely out of the question.  Why is this, you ask?  It’s simple – agents don’t have time to meet people that haven’t been pre-screened for them. One L.A. agent explained it using a Facebook analogy: Imagine if YOU had to respond to every unknown person who ever tried to “friend” you on Facebook and asked to meet you?  How fast would you throw up your privacy controls?  Now you get it.  Nearly every agent said they got their best talent from industry friend referrals, a chance social meeting, or from talent submitting themselves at an audition, showcase, or review event the agent actually attends. It seems to each agent that face to face contact was the one useful common denominator.  Agents know that a persons’s  ’energy’, or ‘vibe’  is ultra-important.  They need to feel like you “give good meeting”;  and therefore, them just looking at random photos in their email inbox doesn’t cut it. Thus, in the modern entertainment world –  getting a good agent to want to sign you still requires a good old fashioned “face-to-face”.

Step 2: Keep that agent loving you. Getting a good agent interested is only the beginning. For a newly signed talent, the expectations for rapid development should be recognized. Talent will be expected to develop a skill for listening, learning, adapting, and following through on any chances they are given.  It begins with agency communication, an ease and pleasure of working with you, and a growing confidence you are capable of handling any audition, casting, or client meetings they set you up with. David Ralph from New York Models said it most simply: “I can get you the appointment.  But only you can light up the room once you walk in”.  Margot Klar-Menzel from Evolution Entertainment said, “I need to have confidence you can stand on your own two feet, get better each day, and leave a great impression with everyone I introduce you to”.    Your first year is important, you need to make progress, gain momentum, and build a solid foundation of early roles, bookings, castings.  This will give you valuable industry credibility, needed experience, and an income to support you as you move towards the next level – hitting your stride in the mainstream high visibility market.

Step 3:  Hit your stride with clients. As the expectations increase, you need to apply what you’ve learned along the way every day.  Survive the slow periods. Weather the occasional flop, dead end, and rebound from any project that tanks.  It’s part of the game.  Rather than describe the general scenario, just read an actual accounting of two of our most admired discoveries below.

Real life, real story: Hilary Rhoda got her start from a ProScout open call in Rockville, MD.  She received 7 agency callbacks at her ProScout event; her badge number was #647.  In her first year, she flipped between two agencies that wanted her, she booked some early bookings, and got her traction with Abercrombie and Ralph Lauren.  But in the big picture, this was just the first-year foundation that gave her enough experience to test the waters in Paris. So, when she was weathering the challenges (and perhaps lack of initial interest that many models must tough out), she was ready when her moment came. When Nicholas Ghesquiere from Balenciaga betted on a young and unknown Hilary to open his show, she became a budding star that the press and industry leaped upon.  This is called “hitting your stride”, and you must be ready for it when and if it comes your way.  Not  to mention staying connected to your growing fans. Real life, real story: Garrett Hedlund attended his ProScout open call in Phoenix, AZ.  he received 5 callbacks at his ProScout event; his badge number was #616. In his first year, he booked a few modeling print jobs, but his effort was focused on going back and forth to L.A.  The first year was slow, as most new artists experience, with little to show for it.  Despite this, Garrett’s meetings with casting directors always returned good feedback. In his second year, he landed his first film role, opposite Brad Pitt in “Troy”, directed by Wolfgang Petersen.  This film gained a wide audience internationally, allowing the young Garrett a chance to “hit his stride”,  get good press, ride the buzz, and build upon the publicity that comes from it.   His next roles placed him among other top actors (Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon, Lindsay Lohan, John Goodman), and each test allowed Garrett the chance to build his agencies confidence that he could read and audition with anyone – and never lose the down-to-earth country boy charm that got him noticed in the first place.

In summary, a newcomer to the industry needs to do a lot of things, but the first steps are 1) getting an agent that can help propel you; 2) then demonstrate you can learn quickly how to navigate the industry, audition with success, and grow a successful first year into a sustainable effort. In other words, Get seen, get signed, get cracking.

Who’s next?

(LOS ANGELES)  Just a few timely notes on a few ProScout-ers in the news this week.  On Thursday, (3/1/12), NBC-TV shows off its long anticipated premier of “Awake”, co-starring Dylan  Minnette (scouted in Evansville, IN).   Dylan plays the son of a family who suffers a horrible auto accident resulting in a double life identity experience for its patriarch, played by Jason Isaacs.  Dylan is repped by UTA Los Angeles. (FYI…. Dylan is set to make a special guest appearance at the ProScout Orange County event in March).

Next is Hayley Holmes, another talent scouted in Indiana, who has been cast in a new Fox-TV  pilot “Prodigy Bully“ alongside actress Missi Pyle (following her co-starring turn in Oscar-winning “The Artist”).  The new show is a Warner Bros./John Wells Productions comedy, and centers on Audie Murphy, a young boy genius who uses his brains and brawn to get whatever he wants. Pyle will play Celeste, Audie’s intense mother.  Audie has not been cast yet but several other kids in the pilot have: Hayley Holmes is already set as Audie’s sister.  After Haley’s recent string of guest star roles on Emmy-winning “Glee”, and Disney’s “Good Luck Charlie”, and the CW’s “90210″, we’re stoked for Haley.  She is a young comic genius who deserves this big beak. Back in New York City, some nice news for recent PS discovery Cierra Skye (age 15, from Derry, PA) who signed with Muse Models NYC the day after her ProScout event last fall. Cierra appears in a campaign for apparel and accessory artist merchant Karen Walker.  Check out these eye-wear fashions, which Walker dubs her ‘little aliens’ for Summer 2012. Also, were a week late to report that Madeline Blake (scouted in Chandler, AZ) knocked off an astounding 10 shows during New York’s Fashion Week.  The shows, which ranged from UGG Australia to Imitation of Christ, were part of her great showing amongst the world’s hottest rising crop of models.  Since Madeline just turned 16 back in January (while she made an appearance at ProScout – Seattle event), we couldn’t be happier for her. And lastly, if you were part of the 30 million people + that tuned in the Oscars last Sunday, ABC-TV aired a promo for their Emmy-winning comedy series “Modern Family”.  The episode they chose to air was the episode featuring guest star Paleigh Knight (Pro-Scouted in Round Rock, TX).  Since Paleigh is only 12 years old, it’s nice to know that her audiences are growing into the millions! Congrats to Paleigh – it must have been a stunning surprise to see your episode in the middle of the Academy Awards ceremony!  Paleigh is repped by CESD and Monster Talent.

(BOSTON) Photos are in from the most recent ProScout Boston event.  (see more photos at facebook.com/ProScoutOfficial ).  Unsigned talent arrived from New England and Quebec, speaking so many languages the agents needed a Rosetta Stone translator at times. In any case, quite a few people received callbacks at the Marriott Copley – Boston hotel; and many others were inspired to now push their barriers a bit further.  Over 40 agents from NY to L.A. were in the house.

Isaac Stroud (Ottawa) came back for his second ProScout. He nailed 9 callbacks, and was signed on Monday to B&M Models Toronto as well as Generation NYC. Bravo!

If you picked #470, Charlotte Schofield (new transplantee to Boston from New York state), you were right. Charlotte seemed a little stunned that she would be “the last person standing” at ProScout – which people find out, is a pretty good place to be.  Charlotte had 16 callbacks during an informal quick Sunday tally. As of Monday morning after, at least 3 agencies had begun the telephone barrage at home that signals the beginning of the agent hunt for a contract.  Congrats Charlotte!

Often, when the message is uplifting, inspiring, and positive.  When when talented writers, directors, and acting talent hit the right notes – together – we the people like what we see. here’s to two past ProScouters who are doing it right, and doing it there way.

(PHILADELPHIA)  Since Thanksgiving 2011, young talent has gone 3-0 in snaring top callback honors at a ProScout event.  Just last weekend, it was 14 year-old Elizabeth Caulfield (from NJ) who emerged with 15 callbacks from major model and acting talent agencies.  This adds to the recent streak began last month with Karlee Appel (age 12) at ProScout Seattle – and Alexis Apple (age 9) at ProScout OC. (LEFT) Katie  Hawkins (from Tulsa, OK) attended ProScout Dallas in early 2011. She was signed by talent agencies Abrams Artists and Paradigm Talent. Her first feature casts her in the lead of a Hallmark Presentation “Puppy Love” (airing July 7).  Story line seems like a family winner – Katie’s character and her single mom take in a stray puppy – only to have a handsome baseball player show up and lay claim to the puppy. What ensues is a shared custody agreement over the dog, providing a little conflict until cupid’s  sparks begin to fly.  AWWW!  Ya gotta love it.

(BELOW) Vampires, tigers, and bears OH MY!   Cherilyn Wilson (BELOW) is perfectly poised for a larger, wide-release breakthrough. Scouted in the Bay area, (CA), Cherilyn has quickly built a solid fan base as a sexy scream flick babe and a solid supporting dramatic actress.  Her recent multiple guest star roles in several hot shows (including) 90210, True Blood, Mad Men, Dexter have her poised for big-scale stardom. What recent price does a rising star have to pay to round the A-list corner you ask? Getting killed by recently murdering rampager Stephan in the CW’s “Vampire Diaries“.  Oh well. She DID look delicious.

Prefer battleships? Check out Jesse Plemons (Proscouted from Mart, TX). This summer he’s on the cast list alongside Liam Neeson, Rihanna (did you say Rihanna?). Yep, Rihanna.  Jesse is still the hardest working supporting actor in H-wood.

Check out the trailer for Battleship, the $200 million dollar blockbuster set for release on screens on May 18, 2012. Jesse is a Navy seaman who first spots the aliens.  This blockbuster will be set in the South Pacific, opening up in Pearl Harbor, then moving on to sexy Brooklyn Decker on Waikiki Beach.  Aliens, battleships, and bikinis – a fairly good summertime flick formula. (NEW YORK)  Brooke Shields made Calvin Klein famous when she said she didn’t wear any. Victoria’s Secret puts them on the runway for the world to see.  Now, ProScout’s past discovery Cory Bond (originally from Kentucky) reignites fans of underwear by launching Michael Kors’ new line of trunks. Kors had to go head to head with Emporio Armani after they booked Rafael Nadal, so the packaging (and video) brings the heat, so to say. The video is age-restricted by youtube. We’re just sayin’.

(NEW YORK) Another ProScout find has hit it big. He’s the current man-face of Gucci Cruise. Buffalo-native, Ryan Kennedy recently climbed to 10 on models.com list of top male models, and is rising to the top of the industry. VMAN magazine gave him “next-big-thing status,” as a contender for the Most Valuable Players of male modeling. From runway to editorial, he’s worked for Louis Vuitton, Etro, Aldo, 7 For All Mankind, and Abercrombie & Fitch, and is currently signed with Wilhelmina Models in New York.

How and when did you get started modeling?
I got started after I went to a ProScout event in Rochester [NY], which is where I met my manager. He brought me to NYC, and got me signed with my first agency, IMG Models. I was a senior in high school at the time. Modeling was definitely not something that I thought I would end up doing. In fact, after I signed with my agency I decided to go to college for 2 years before I started.
My first job, believe it or not, was an editorial for Playboy. lol. I had my clothes on.

So, Gucci. Congratulations on a great campaign. Tell me about shooting it – What was it like? The behind-the-scenes video is hot – What is it like doing sexy shoots with models like supermodel Natasha Poly?
Thanks. It was a fun shoot. It was great working with Mert and Marcus [the photographers of the shoot]. They’re the best in the business, and I was fortunate enough to be able to shoot with them twice.
The shoot is not as sexy as it looks.There’s like 20 people watching you, along with a camera right in your face. lol. I’m glad it looks that way though, because that means we did our job.

Best part of being a male model?
It’s not a 9-5 job. Every day is different. The traveling is fun for a while, and then it gets kind of old. Can’t complain though…

Your career is growing fast: What’s your proudest career moment so far? Was there a specific point in time where you realized, “wow, holy ****, I’m really doing it?”

I would say this past year is when I realized “wow, I’m really doing this.” I never really thought of this as being a possible career, but now that I’m working more and more, it’s really starting to turn into something.

Current favorite brand? Current favorite song/music?
I’m not too big into brand-name designer clothes. lol. I wear stuff that designers give me, but other than that I like American Apparel.
It’s hard to pick out a favorite song. I listen to a lot of Kings of Leon, a lot of hip hop/rap (Lil Wayne) lol.

What have you learned?

What’s next? What are you excited about?
I’m looking to start investing in real estate. It’s something I’ve always been interested in. I’ve been looking at apartments in New York and hopefully by the end of this year will have purchased my first property.
